Lupie Goes To Super Bowl Party

My husband and I went to a Super Bowl party last night. We wanted to bring some food to add to the mix, but I hadn't been feeling well, so making something was out of the question. Also, because garlic and various other party foods can cause me to have a nasty lupus flare, I wanted to make sure there would be something at the party I would be able to eat. So what did I do?

I brought a bag of oranges.

Yes, oranges. Cara cara oranges to be exact. I LOVE cara cara oranges. But still...oranges. To a Super Bowl party. I was so sure that I'd walk in with my oranges and be greeted with scowls and mocking and, "You brought what?" But that wouldn't stop me. I was bringing oranges no matter the consequences, and no amount of ridicule would break my spirit. So as I walked through the front door, I braced myself. I held out my bag of oranges to the host of the party. And then...the ridicule I was waiting for never came.

The party was full of very nice people who like to smile. I should have realized they wouldn't make fun of me. They'll just smile at me as they ignore my bag of oranges, I thought.

At the end of the night, I went to the kitchen to grab my bag of untouched fruit to take home. But they were gone. All of them! People ate my oranges! Oranges for the win!

Moral of the story: Chronic illnesses can make for a lot of awkward situations, but don't let that keep you from doing what you need to do. Take care of yourself even when that means being a little weird...because often times things don't turn out to be as awkward as we imagine they will be. So stay true to yourself. Even if that means bringing a bag of oranges to a Super Bowl party.
